Kinnaree Gourmet Thai

This is a quiet place set back on Sukhumvit Soi 8. It’s actually further down the road than you think and the signage leading up to the restaurant is minimal. But once your at the driveway the blue sign tells you’ve arrived. There is a hostess standing near the driveway entrance that walks you in and hands you off to wait staff that seat you.

I have to say, my waitress was friendly and she did her job efficiently. They had something on the menu that caught my eye. It was an appetizer called Krathong Thong which was small pastry shells with some sort of whipped potato, minced chicken and herbs. It was very good. They were small but you do get eight of them.  For the main course I had chicken and cashew. They prepared this very well and the flavor was excellent. On a down note, it did not come with rice and they will charge you extra for ordering it.

I have eaten now over my last two visits.  The food is reliably good but the wait staff attitude can vary.  Another thing I notice that on my last visit, the bill included tax and a 10% service charge.  Still, I would eat here occasionally.

Brooklyn Baker

This place can be a little hard to find. It is tucked away on an off the beaten track Soi, near Lumphini Park. It is also part of Retreat on Vitayu, a very nice spa. Hours can be a little difficult because the spa opens at 10am and some web pages and reviews post that as the opening of Brooklyn Baker. The Baker opens at 8:30am but staff told me they close at 3pm.

Anyway, I had the pancakes with banana and a Carmel syrup and candied Walnuts. It was good but the place is a bit out of the way from where I was staying. If you are staying near Lumphini Park, this would be a good breakfast option.

Shangarila Restaurant

This is a nice place with indoor seating right in the heart of Chinatown.  Overwhelmingly decorated in red, with ample seating. There may be more seating in the rear as I was seating in the front room and could not tell. The wait staff are attentive but speak little to no English. However the Hostess speaks well and can assist if pointing on the menu doesn’t work.

I just stopped in for a quick lunch and ordered the Chicken and Cashew. This is a Thai dish that they did very well. They have a good selection of Chinese and Thai dishes. Service was quick and I left very satisfied.  I would repeat here for lunch or dinner when in Chinatown.

Hours:  Monday through Thursday, 11:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Address:  On Yaowarat Road near corner of Rajchawong

Big Mama Tapas

I had been eating a lot of Thai food by this point in the trip. It was good and I enjoy it but wanted to try something different. Went here for tapas but their pizza menu is extensive and it all sounded so good. There is some outdoor seating and the indoor seating is very cool and great to get out of the heat. I was here for lunch. It was so good I went two times.  The price was reasonable but on my second visit I had a dessert that was rather expensive for just chocolate cake.

Favorite Dish: The first time I went I had a personal size pizza with half Thai pizza and the other half basil, mozzarella, and tomato sauce. It was very good. The Thai side was diced chicken in a tasty Thai sauce. It was very good. On my second visit I had just the Thai pizza.
