Wat Phan Tao

Another small temple but of special significance. This is one of the few temples in Chiang Mai made completely of Teak Wood panels and is still standing. The difference from the other Wat’s is almost immediate, especially when you you step inside the temple. Large teak columns support the roof. It is also not as ornate as many of the other temples around Chiang Mai. But some modernization has come to Wat Phan Tao. There is a newly constructed/renovated Chedi and what appears to be a faux river. There is a bathroom on site behind the temple. The temple serves as the living quarters for the monks of Wat Chedi Luang, which is right next door. There were quite a few Monks walking about.

Directions: Located on Phra Pok Klao road just south of Ratchadamnoen road.

Wat Phan On

While this is a small temple, it was one of my favorites. The temple was built in 1501. The chedi is a brilliant gold color with a small Buddha statue encased at the base. There is a large gong in front and several bells. Buddhist and tourists are welcome to ring the bells and hit the gong. Just be respectful. One ring or hit the the gong is sufficient.

The temple seemed to be more ornate than others. The doors and windows have beautifully carved figures. Inside is a large golden Buddha. If you want to see several Wat’s, this should be on of them. It was quiet and beautiful.

Directions: Located at the southeast corner of Rachadamneon Rd and Rachapakinai Rd in the old city. Only a few minutes walk fro the Tha Phae Gate.

Wat Sun Pow

This small Wat is located along the way I was traveling in the Old City and thought I would stop in. There is no fee and it is small. It does have a nice ornate Ubosot and a Buddha statue under a small pavilion next to the temple. It is easy for a quick look but if you are not into the temples, you are not missing much if you walk on by.

Directions: On Rachadamnoen Rd, near the northeast corner with Rachapakinai Rd.

Wat Baan Ping

This is a small temple but has some wonderful buildings and ornate entrances. The entrance of the Ubosot (ordination hall) is guarded by two Naga (dragons). The Wihan (teaching hall is guarded by two mythical creatures I haven’t seen before at other temples in Chiang Mai. A very quiet temple and the art work was fascinating. Some of the building here are new as there was a fire not too long ago. Reconstruction was completed in 2010.

Directions: Near the corner of Rachawiti rd and across from Wat Umong.

Wat Dokkham

This is a small temple near the Tha Phae Gate. It is undergoing some renovation and has a new chedi being constructed when I visited. As with many of the temples in Chiang Mai, there are several spellings for this one. I always go with the spelling that the Temple uses as the sign in front of the location.

Again, as I found with many locations in Chiang Mai, Google map is WAY OFF on where the location is. Do not rely on Google map to find it. After passing through the Tha Phae Gate going west, turn right. Walk one block and turn left. This is where the temple is located.
