Wat Traimit is the location of the world’s largest gold Buddha. Known as Sukhothai Traimit Gold Buddha, it stands over 15 feet in height and has a 12 feet diameter. The Buddha is made of solid good weighing 5.5 tons. At today’s gold price that is about $38.5 million.
The statue is over 700 hundred years old. While this Buddha was always known to be an important figure because of it’s instillation as the principle Buddha at Wat Phrayakrai, it was only in 1955 that it was discovered to be made of gold. This however happened by accident. This Buddha had been covered in plaster to hide the fact it was gold from invading army’s many years ago. When the Buddha was be prepared to move to its new location, a piece broke off revealing the fact it was made of gold. If they were more careful in 1955, we may never had found this out.
