Victory Monument

The monument is located in the Ratchathewi District and is one of the major transportation hubs in Bangkok. The monument is a large obelisk that was erected in the middle of a major round about intersection. The BTS Skytrain has a station here by the same name and the rail circles around the monument.

It was erected in 1941 to commemorate the victory of the short-lived Franco-Thai war. This war was only from late 1940 to early 1941 with Thailand winning every battle decisively. Japan brokered the deal to end the war which gave land back to Thailand that was then part of Cambodia and Vietnam. Interestingly, much of this was given back in 1945 after victory over Japan in World War II.  Today, the outskirts of the roundabout is lined with stalls of clothes and home goods where local Thai shop. There are also many buses and vans taking people to outlying cities and beach towns.

Directions: Take the Skytrain to Victory Monument station. If you arrive from the Bearing direction turn left when you walk down from the train level. Do not go down to street level. There is a elevated walkway that give the best view of the monument.
